EGM TOMORROW at 5pm in A25!!!

Tomorrow is the Extraordinary General Meeting of Newport Students' Union. It will be held in A25 at 5pm.

WHY IS THIS RELEVANT TO YOU?

The main issue under discussion is the SU's constitution. We need students to vote on the newly proposed constitution, and this document will dictate how the SU is governed, and how decisions on your behalf are made. For this reason it is so important that you attend, and have your say on your union.

CAN ANYONE ATTEND?

All students are welcome to attend, but will need to present their student ID to receive a voting card. If you haven't read the newly proposed constitution, it is available at newportunion.com/yourunion/constitution

IS IT WORTH BOTHERING?

Yes: If you attend events at the SU, or use the bar or shop, if you are in a sports team, or a society. If you're a course rep, or have complained to a course rep previously. If you work in the bar, or help out with the student media.

Basically if you are involved with the SU, or benefit from using any of it's services, then it is possibly the one meeting that is definitely worth bothering with!

We hope to see you all there.

Love,

Jennifer Moran
Communications Officer

Chinese New Year

While most of us have already settled into the New Year with January coming to a close, it's very easy for us to forget that for some, the Chinese New Year has yet to come.

Cue a notice on the mLE, which says that there are Chinese New Year Celebrations in Cardiff on February 14th. While this notice is already on the mLE it is definitely worth the extra mention, as there are stage performances, folk art workshops, kite exhibitions, lion dancing and, excitingly enough, more stuff scheduled. From 10 til 4 this is a good idea for anyone interested in ringing in the Chinese New Year in style.

Ah, but the most important part: it's a free event, and is being held in the Wales Millennium Centre. Fancy that.

Su Exec Meeting on Monday

Hey folks! Just keeping you apprised of the goings on in the SU. On Monday a motion was submitted to improve the environmental operations of the SU, and was passed by a unanimous vote. It was nice and simple:

"TITLE: Motion for Newport Students Union to reduce energy usage by turning of all electrical appliances at night

PROPOSED BY: Rhiannon Tate (E&E Officer)

THE UNION NOTES: At the 2009 AGM the Union resolved to a review of its environmental operations and improve where possible. Cutting down energy use is a simple first step, and if the union is to encourage other students to do the same it must lead the way. A wider review of the environmental impact of the SU will take place during the 09/10 academic year.

THE UNION RESOLVES: To turn off all unused electrical appliances at night, including lights, computers, printers etc. in an effort to reduce energy consumption."

May be a small accomplishment, but hopefully one of many to come.

Welcome Back!

Hi Guys

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written on here, hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year and enjoyed your time off. The reason I haven’t written for a while is because I’ve had some laptop issues and also a hand in, so I’m sure you can all sympathize! I haven’t been able to do much recently but I have still been going to all the meetings I’m meant to so I’m up to date with everything I need to know and now that I’ve handed in I can get back to work.

I do want to let you know that all the part time SU officers that were at the executive meeting on Monday have voted in favor of alcohol being at least 50p a unit, it’s very rare that we sell alcohol for under 50p a unit anyway so it won’t mean that prices have to go up and hopefully it’ll mean that you’re a bit safer and know what you’re drinking.

Gemma xx

International Blog

Welcome back post

Seeing as this is the first blog post for the new year, let me start off by saying that I hope you have all enjoyed the Christmas break, and are now back refreshed and ready to take a big chunk out of semester 2.

For those of you who are interested in what I have been up to recently, I have been between the International Office and Wales International Study Centre, having chats with people in offices! Also, I have been looking into setting up some kind of forum so that I can access a lot of international students in one go. Hopefully this gets off the ground in the near future, as this could pave the way for greater student representation.

If anyone has any queries or suggestions, you can now send them to my union address which is international.su@newport.ac.uk

Feel free to contact me :)

Til next time
x
