SU Blog 29/11/12

3.11pm Thursday, 29th November 2012

This week has been considerably quieter than last week. Maybe because stuff is starting to wind down before Christmas, or maybe the loans have run out and everyone is taking an early New Year's Resolution and turning to hibernation? It's certainly cold enough!

Pablo has been in and out of meetings AGAIN! He attended Students as partners in Glamorgan with unions from all over Wales discussing the New Union and how other Unions run so we can create the best Union for you that we can. He also went to speak to Student Services to find out what students want and how best to implement the needs of students into the University itself. He is now in City Campus preparing for SU executive meeting tonight.

Verity isn't very well today, so give her some love if you see her about! She organised RAG committee which had its first meeting this week which all Sabbs and a few students attended and it was a great success. One of the two charities has already been chosen and the second slot will be open to students to vote on, so watch this space! She also attended the LGBT Think Tank where the team updated the enrolment issue so students no longer have to declare their sexuality at enrolment. She was also in the Students as Partners meeting with Pablo.

Chris has been busy organising the Newport's Got Talent final which is tomorrow night. He has also been sorting out Comedy Night which is TONIGHT! Also the Christmas party has been booked for the 7th of December and rumours are, Santa is coming to Newport University! He also helped Rhodri (our PT LBGT Officer with out in Sport and did his usual mad running around for Wednesday's Sports day!

I (Kahla) have been doing more of my usual Comms stuff, sorting out the Radio, later today a full Rota of shows will be released so you can know exactly who is on air and when. I have also been promoting and advertising the events we have over the next week or so, if anyone touches my chalk boards in the SU bar I will hunt them down! I have a meeting tomorrow with a very exciting television company about ways we can promote NTV this year and make it run smoothly. Also; at Newport's Got Talent this Friday, we have a film crew present to film all of the amazing acts! I think the highlight of the week was getting smacked in the face with a pigeon in Newport Bus Station...

Don't forget, it's Comedy Night tonight! (£2 entry) and Newport's Got Talent FINAL tomorrow night! Also the awards ceremony for Movember is being tied in with NGT so bring along your moustaches!

We have also been looking through your suggestions in our Suggestions Box in the bar. Love them! Keep them coming in, we have taken on board nearly all of the ideas, so watch this space!

That's all for this week. Check back next week for more updates from your Sabbs :)

SU Blog 22/11/12

10.22am Thursday, 22nd November 2012

Good morning everyone! Sorry for the delay on the blog this week, yesterday was a crazy day with Demo2012 going on and it being our biggest sports day of the week.

So what have we been up to this week?

Firstly, some students have come up to us about setting up societies which is amazing, however we need at least 10 students to sign up to make a society viable.

Mooting Society Sailing Society Debate Team Badminton Society

If you want to help set up these teams and societies, or just want to get involved, send an email to Chris our VP and Activities Officer on activities@newport.ac.uk. Or if you want to set up an entirely new society, just get emailing, it's super easy to set one up and the SU is here to help you out.

We also had our student Merger talks with the VC Stephen Hagan, Deputy VC Graham Rogers and Mike Hill Director of Commercial and External Services. There were a lot of issues raised and hopefully solved, from students on courses that have been cut to students just wanting to know what their degree means. There is going to be a FAQ released for students soon and we will provide the link to that as soon as it is released so if you missed the first meetings you can find any answers to your questions before the next one. The Newport Students' Union would like to thank everyone that showed up, it was great so see so many students that want to get really involved with their education and their university!

Yesterday a bus of 15 students went down to Demo2012. We haven't heard how it was for them yet, but Twitter made some interesting following yesterday!

WHAT HAVE THE SU TEAM BEEN UP TO THIS WEEK?

Pablo (President) - Pablo has been in meetings all week (again!) working on the New University Vision with the Board of Governors. If you have any suggestions for the New University, or have any concerns, email president@newport.ac.uk and he will be able to either answer your questions, or forward them on to someone who knows the answer and can help you best.

Verity (VP & Education and Welfare) - Verity has been organising the training for our two new Student Advocates, and is very excited to have some people helping her out! She also attended Academic Board this week and is in the process of helping set up the Student Experience Sub Group for the future. The first Safety Angels was a massive success, they weren't very busy, but it was great to see them all out there in high vis jackets looking very cool!

Chris (VP & Activities) - Chris has been sorting out Sports this week, unfortunately most games got cancelled because of the rain! He also had to drive our Netball girls to their game in Cardiff because a Newport Bus got stuck at the bottom of the drive into Uni. Newport's Got Talent is in full swing and the Semi Finals are this Friday, so come along and say hi! He has also declared Thursdays Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie days, to be honest, the rest of the Sabb team aren't quite sure about this!

Kahla (VP & Communications) - This week I have been doing more work on the Radio, even if it was 'broken' yesterday and it turns out all a certain student needed to do was press 'play'! Doing general stuff like designing posters for upcoming events andI have also been working on the NSS (National Student Survey) Campaign with the University's Digital Marketing Officer. I can't reveal much just yet, but it's going to be VERY funny!

So that's all for this week! If you have any questions or thoughts, or want to see us doing something else, then let us know on comms@newport.ac.uk

Don't forget, it's the Semi Final of Newport's Got Talent this Friday at 8pm. Don't miss out!!

SU Blog 14/11/12

12.48pm Wednesday, 14th November 2012

Good morning guys,

We know it is hard for students to see what we do in the office all day. Every now and again we hear exclaims of "What exactly do that SU lot do in there?". So here it is, a new weekly blog that tells you what we have been up to.

The blog will (hopefully) be released every Wednesday so you can see what we are doing week to week, where we have done good things, and where things have or haven't worked. If you have any suggestions feel free to come and chat to us, we have an open door policy, so everyone is welcome :)

This week is a particularly busy week for everyone.

Pablo, our President has been in various meetings all week including the University of Wales quality standards meeting and today is attending the Board of Governors meeting today to talk about the merger. Very exciting stuff but we have hardly seen him this week! If you see him in the corridor, give him a cuddle, everyone appreciates a cuddle!

Verity, our Education and Welfare Officer is busy preparing for the first venture of Safety Angels. The office is covered in bagged up gloves and first aid kits! It has also been the launch of Money Week! Every year Student Services has a week called Money Week that is there to help students understand more about their finances and give them support, Verity (with the help of Kahla the Comms Officer and Rhodri our LGBT Officer) launched our Alcohol Monsters campaign during Money Week, so if you see any cute little monster stickers around, that will be the reason why! Posters will start to go our in the next week or so. Verity has also been at Course Rep training twice this week and in a merger meeting with staff and Sabbs from Glamorgan too, and it's only Wednesday!

Chris the Activities Officer has been sorting our new Sports and Societies t-shirts and they look AWESOME. Just pop into the Bar on Caerleon Campus on a Wednesday afternoon to see all the sports teams in there with their branded polo shirts looking very suave indeed. He has also sorted out all the team photos and attended the merger meeting with Sabbs from Glamorgan. The rest of the week for Chris means planning and organising Newport's Got Talent's second round of Auditions this Friday.

Kahla the Communications Officer (me!) has been sorting out and promoting the NSUFS Long Film weekend, 5 days of packed film related fun including a competition! (Search on Facebook for more details) I has also been promoting all the upcoming events such as the Merger Talks with the VC (along with talking to the Deputy VC and pushing to get the dates confirmed) Newport's Got Talent, Comedy Nights and a few more things we have in the pipeline. The radio is also up and running with most DJ's now trained up and well on their way with their very own shows.

Of course the main thing that has been going on this week is constant talks about the upcoming Merger. We have two days set up where you can go and talk to the Vice Chancellor of Newport Uni, Prof Stephen Hagan, ask him questions and find out more.

Thursday, 15 November at 12.30 at City Campus, Lecture Theatre A10 Friday, 16 November at 12.30 at Caerleon Campus, Lecture Theatre Rathmell E10

http://www.facebook.com/events/444179912311616/?fref=ts

This is our chance to have our say, ask questions and really get our views heard by the top guys at the Uni that don't normally have much contact with students. IF WE DON'T GET MANY PEOPLE ATTENDING THIS ONE, IT IS UNLIKELY THEY WILL RUN ANOTHER BECAUSE THEY WILL ASSUME STUDENTS DON'T CARE. We do care about our education, let's get involved and prove it!

It is very important that you come along as it will answer all the questions you have.

See you there!
