Sam, Porthcawl is the nearest break that's consistent, but if you surf at quite a high level Gower has more reef breaks. There are lots of good breaks along this stretch of coast but it's bad form to post them online. Drop by the next surf club meeting or social and we can chat about it.

Hey Fiona, no problem about commitments. The surf club operates on a relaxed basis. We run the trips, and whoever puts their name down first gets to go basically. They'll be enough trips throughout the year so that people can go as often or as occasionally as they like.

Hey! I am interested in joining surf club, fo fun as I have never been surfing before! Crazy as I live near Croyde bay! Anyway I was wondering what level of commitment is required because I am doing the secondary maths/ict course and I have heard it is a very tough one! I will be starting at the uni next week! :) xxx

Hey Will. Head to the SU office with a passport size photo and your £20 and tell them you'd like to pay to join the surf club. :)

Hey Rose! If you've paid £20 to the su and said it was for the surf club you're all covered. If you signed up for more than one society it might be a bit more complicated?

About our society

Whether you're a semi-pro, intermediate or have never set foot in the water, UWN Surf Club is for anyone who is interested in surfing. Bodyboarders welcome too! If you're an absolute beginner then more experienced members can introduce you to the sport, if you're looking to improve you can get tips from others, and there are competitions both locally and nationally that can allow you to hone your skills. Trips go to the local surf breaks regularly, and in the right conditions Wales has some of the best breaks in the UK.

This year the surf club is also going to have a lot more going out of the water, with socials, film nights and fundraisers.

Membership of the Surf Club costs £20 for the whole year. That may seem like a lot now, but it's a small price to pay for what you get. Your membership buys you:
- Your insurance. It's important that you're covered when surfing in case you injure yourself or someone else.
- Access to the club equipment and reduced rental costs for equipment we don't have from local surf shops.
- Regular trips to the local surf breaks, and several ones further afield throughout the year.
- The chance to enter in national and local competitions, including the BUCS interuniversity contest in Cornwall.
- 10% discount at City Surf Cardiff, the closest shop for surf gear.
- Free and/or reduced entry to any Surf Club events, such as film nights.
- A membership card, so you can get your surf shop discount and free entry.

Best of all you get the chance to meet up with the other surfers and uni, and improve your surfing!

Sign up here and become a fan of UWN Surf Club on Facebook to talk to the other surfers at Newport, or feel free to post here with any questions you might have.
