New Constitution - EGM 2010 - 9th February 2010

The Students Union needs to reform inline with all other Union's within the UK, it needs to become a registered charity. To complete this change in governance a new constitution has been put forward. An EGM has been arranged to get the new constitution passed. The EGM will take place at 5PM on 9th February in A25. It is important that as many people as possible attend the EGM as a minimum of 80 students are required for the meeting to take place.

Current Constitution - Passed 9th March

The Students' Union is governed by a constitution. Currently the Union is in a interim period due to the following factors:

1. The old Constitution, introduced in 2004, had become irrelevant and out-of-date, so much so that it had become ignored by previous SU Teams.
2. In November 2009 ALL Students' Unions must become charities registered with the Charities Commission. This imposing strict guidelines on how Union's are goverened and how they operate in general.
3. Due to the above factors a new, more representative and up-to-date constitution was written in 2009 and passed by 93% majority at the Annual General Meeting on March 9th.
4. The new constitution then went before the University's solicitors who advised against the new constitution due to a number of concerns mainly centering on the responsibilities and rights of trustees
5. The constitution is in the process of being amended and will be presented to the University's Board of Governors and Charity Commission ASAP.

In the mean time many of the elements of the new constitution are being implemented in 2008/09 including the introduction of a Vice-President (Communications), new part-time officers and a democratic piece of history with the introduction of new committees allowing students to have their say on Sports, Entertainment, Media and any issues Education & Welfare based.
