NUS

NUS is the National Union of Students to which Newport Students' Union and thus you belong. The NUS campaign on national issues affecting students such as student finance and racism in Universities. Affiliation to NUS also means that the NUS provides support during elections and training to new sabbatical or part-time officers. There is a financial incentive too, NUSSL (National Union of Students Services Limited) is the commercial arm of NUS and negiotiates national deals with major companies to secure better prices for Students' Union shops and bars.

Wes Streeting is the National President and the primary 'voice of the students' of Great Britain, he often writes articles for The Guardian regarding student issues.

Every year, in March/April, at its AGM in Blackpool major decisions on NUS policy are voted upon by students, from Newport the President is always expected to attend as well as two students elected by you. More details on how to represent your Union at NUS Annual Conference will be available as the Conference approaches.

NUS Extra

Another great service NUS offers is the NUS Extra card. NUS Wales

Newport SU is also part of NUS Wales, a national subsidiary of NUS. NUS Wales campaigns on issues affecting students more directly in Wales. Katie Dalton is the current President of NUS Wales, she was NUS Wales Women's Officer last year (2008/09) and before that spent two years as President of Swansea Metropolitan Students' Union.
