In addition to the sabbatical / full-time officers who run the Union on a day-to-day basis there are elected part-time officers who represent specific areas of student activity or specific groups of the student body. Elections for these roles will take place on the 26th & 27th October this year (2009) and if you're interested in any role pop in the SU office on either campus for more info and a nomination form. You can find out more about each role below.
Role:
The Student Accommodation Officer is the first point of call for students who are having problems with their landlords whether that be privately rented accommodation, Opal halls or even the University’s Halls of Residence. They Student Accommodation Officer should also assist students who need support finding accommodation in emergencies such as dramatic disagreements with fellow tenants.
The Student Accommodation Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with the University’s Accommodation Office and the Students’ Union Letting Agency (should this become applicable).

The Student Accommodation Officer should report any issues they feel uncomfortable or unable to deal with (for whatever reason) to the Vice-President (Education & Welfare).

The Student Accommodation Officer is expected to sit on the following committees:

Role: The International Students’ Officer should be the main representative of the International Students at the University of Wales, Newport. The Union determination of the term ‘International Student’ differs from the University’s and includes all students who are based outside of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. The International Students’ Officer should provide a voice for international students in the Union’s and University decision making.
The International Students’ Officer is responsible for co-ordinating the International Students events with the Vice-President (Activities) and Venue/Bar Manager.
The International Students’ Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with the University’s International Office and the Wales International Study Centre (WISC).

Role:
The Part-Time Students’ Officer should be the main representative of the Part-Time Students at the University of Wales, Newport. The Part-Time Students’ Officer should provide a voice for part-time students in the Union’s and University decision making, finding out the needs and views of the part-time student body and addressing it at Students’ Council and Union Executive Board. The Part-Time Students’ Officer should also support the Vice-President (Education & Welfare) in ensuring all part-time courses have at least one recognised course representative.
The Part-Time Students’ Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with all of the University’s Academic Schools and the Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning (CCLL).

Role:
The Post-Graduate Students’ Officer should be the main representative of the Post-Graduate Students at the University of Wales, Newport. The Post-Graduate Students’ Officer should provide a voice for post-grad students in the Union’s and University decision making, finding out the needs and views of the part-time student body and addressing it at Students’ Council and Union Executive Board. The Post-Graduate Students’ Officer should also support the Vice-President (Education & Welfare) in ensuring all post-grad courses have at least one recognised course representative.
The Post-Graduate Students’ Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with all of the University’s Academic Schools.

Role:
The Mature Students’ Officer should be the main representative of the mature students at the University of Wales, Newport. The Mature Students’ Officer should provide a voice for mature students in the Union’s and University decision making, finding out the needs and views of the mature student body and addressing it at Students’ Council and Union Executive Board. The Mature Students’ Officer should work with the Vice-President (Communications) to ensure all communication strategies and promotional campaigns are accessible for the mature student body.
The Mature Students’ Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with all of the University’s Academic Schools.

Role:
The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender) Officer should be the main representative of the LGBT students at the University of Wales, Newport. LGBT Officer should provide a voice for LGBT students in the Union’s and University decision making, finding out the needs and views of the LGBT student body and addressing it at Students’ Council and Union Executive Board.
The LGBT Officer should run the LGBT Society and liaise with the Vice-President (Activities) to ensure events for the LGBT are arranged.
The LGBT Officer should have a good relationship with the NUS LGBT Officer.

The Disability Officer should be the main representative of students with disabilities at the University of Wales, Newport. Disabilities can be any number of things from learning difficulties like dyslexia or physical impairments like blindness or loss of use in certain limbs. Representing students who may experience any difficulty in either studying or enjoying their time at Newport is so important and the Disability Officer should provide a voice for those students in the Union’s and University decision making, finding out the needs and views of the disabled student body and addressing it at Students’ Council and Union Executive Board. The Disabled Students’ Officer should work with all the officers of the Union to ensure its services, communication and events cater for the needs of varying disabilities.
The Disability Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with Student Services’ and their disability team.

The Allt-yr-yn Officer is the main voice of students studying at the Allt-yr-yn campus, they should ensure that Allt-yr-yn is represented in all Union decision making and have an important role in ensuring that the move of students from Allt-yr-yn to City Campus is being planned with the needs of Business Students in mind, by the University. The Allt-yr-yn Officer should ensure the Common Room is maintained to a high standard and that any other possible short-term improvements for Allt-yr-yn are achieved to improve the quality of the student experience there. They should work with the Vice-President (Communications) to make sure as many Allt-yr-yn students are aware of the Union’s activity.
The Allt-yr-yn Officer would be expected to have a good relationship with Newport Business School and will sit on their School Quality Assurance & Enhancement Committee.

The Race & Equality Officer is tasked with ensuring the University and Union represent and treat all students equally. The Race & Equality Officer should be the first point of call for complaints of racism, sexism or age discrimination. They should also work with NUS on implementing national campaigns in Newport to encourage a fairer environment.

The Campaigns & Activism Officer should lead up Newport SU’s campaigns whatever they may be (As directed by executive board and, more commonly, AGM). The Campaigns & Activism Officer should be a passionate individual who genuinely cares about improving Newport as a University, a Union and, to an extent, a City.
The Campaigns & Activism Officer will liase with NUS officials on national campaigns and organise Newport’s involvement with these. Whilst being active the Campaigns & Activism Officer also has a responsibility to keep the Union’s policy of being unaffiliated with any political party.

The Welsh Language Officer shall be in charge of developing a Welsh Language Policy for the Students’ Union in 2009/10 and thereafter ensuring that the Union sticks to this policy.
The Welsh Language Officer should be able to provide support for students whose first language is Welsh and may be struggling in a predominately ‘English’ environment. They should also be able to support other officers and staff in the Union in translating English to Welsh for publication.
It goes without saying the Welsh Language Officer must be fluent in Welsh!

The Environment & Ethics Officer is the voice of socially aware students at Newport who want to ensure the Union and University acts in a manner which respects the environment and is ethically sound.
The Environment & Ethics Officer will sit on University panels regarding Ethics such as the Research Ethics Committee and the environment committee within the Estates department (The department of the University that deals with maintenance, catering, accommodation etc.).
This role requires a passionate student who cares about ensuring the Uni and Union are green and ethical.

The Student Safety Officer should ensure that Newport is a safe environment for students. This could be asking the University to put more lighting in a car park or campaigning to the Council to improve taxi services. They will attend the Police Liaison Meetings with the SU President to ensure student safety is kept on the agenda of the local police.
The Student Safety Officer will work closely with the University’s Premises Manager.

Role
The Entertainments Support Officer assists the Vice-President (Entertainments) in planning and setting-up events, trips and parties for students. Previous Ents. Supports Officers have hosted their own regular events as compliments to the bigger parties such as quiz nights, bingo nights etc. They will also be asked to aid the promotion of the events via flyering, postering or sending out e-mails/facebook messages.
The Entertainments Support Officer would be expected to be very enthusiastic, lively and interested in helping Newport students have the most fun possible during their time here.

The Entertainments Support Officer should report directly to the Vice-President (Entertainments) and work with them on a regular basis.

Role
The Athletic Union Support Officer assists the Vice-President (Athletic Union & Societies) in organising the activity of the Union’s sports teams. They will assist in arranging fixtures, referees, transport etc. but also in developing the Athletic Union and organising the Sports & Societies Committee with the VP (Athletic Union & Societies). This officer will also help with the organisation of the Sports Ball.
The Athletic Union Support Officer would be expected to be very enthusiastic, lively and passionate about sport and the Union’s sports teams.
Reports to
The Athletic Union Support Officer should report directly to the Vice-President (Athletic Union) and work with them on a regular basis.
